Andrew Heath

Andrew Heath hails from Bristol in England and is currently a junior lecturer in American History at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. He received his BA from University College London in 2001 and his Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Pennsylvania.

Andrew’s research interests lie principally in the urban history of the Civil War era. His thesis, which won the Urban History Association’s dissertation prize, explored how the ideology and practice of U.S. imperial expansion between the Panic of 1837 and the Great Strike of 1877 shaped plans to reconstruct Philadelphia into a city with the commercial energy of London and the urban grandeur of Paris.

Andrew is currently revising his dissertation for publication while beginning work on a new comparative project that will examine deindustrialization and designs for urban space in the steel cities of Pittsburgh and Sheffield. He can be contacted at a.d.heath@shef.ac.uk.
